Heat storage is an increasingly popular form of increasing energy efficiency by storing excess heat and using it in periods when this heat is required by users. There are many heat storage technologies (from stone deposits, through sand, to heat carriers using phase changes – paraffin or brine tanks). An example sand-based warehouse (one hundred tons of sand!) allows you to store heat at a temperature of up to 500oC. For one of our clients, we analyzed a system that allows storing energy in the form of heat. The concept was to use a heat storage facility and eliminate fuel oil (with a high cost of generating heat), which would be possible with a storage facility with a capacity of 300 MWh. In the case of a larger heat storage facility (1,500 MWh), it would be possible to balance the heat on a monthly basis, which would help eliminate or significantly reduce the production of heat from network natural gas.
The solution would generate annual savings: for 300 MWh – about PLN 2 million; for 1,500 MWh – about PLN 5 million.
