What is energy efficiency
Energy efficiency according to regulatory and engineering approaches is a reduction in energy consumption per unit of product.
What does this mean?
Increased energy efficiency does not always result in a nominal reduction in energy consumption.
Example:
200 kWh/100pcs – 300 kWh/200pcs = 2 [kWh/szt] – 1.5 kWh/pc = 0.5 kWh/pc
White certificate system
We recommend that Enterprises take the following approach, which will allow them to analyze all options related to energy demand and find appropriate solutions that will form the core of the decarbonization path:
White certificates
White certificates make it possible to obtain additional financing for planned projects, including for companies receiving other state aid, including within economic zones:
Energy efficiency vs. industry decarbonization
- Increased energy efficiency is always directly related to a reduction in CO2 emissions (according to the emission factors of individual fuels or electricity of the KOBiZE)
- Reducing emissions in this way is the easiest way not only to save economically (in the long term), but also to reduce the carbon footprint of Scope 1, which is directly and independently influenced by the company (usually as opposed to Scope 3 emissions)
- Developing a plan to implement energy efficiency projects can be a major component of a company’s decarbonization plan, which the company can be confident of implementing
- Implementation of energy efficiency projects enshrined in a mandatory energy audit is increasingly a condition for receiving financial support from public funds
Examples of energy efficiency projects in industry
Example 1 – turning back the exhaust gas in the process
Description:
Turning back hot flue gases will enable more complete energy recovery and reduce natural gas consumption per Mg of finished product. The amount of returned flue gas will be controlled by an automation system depending on the operation of the burners. At present, fresh air to the burners is preheated on a plate heat exchanger, with the flue gases discharged to the emitter. In this way, only part of the energy is recovered. As part of the task, in order to make fuller use of the energy contained in the waste gas, it is necessary to make a loop to turn back part of the flue gas. To this end, it is planned to upgrade the flue gas ducts, eliminate dead spaces and protect the bag filter against corrosion. Due to the temperature of the flue gas, close to the condensation temperature of moisture, there is a need to modernize the existing elements of the flue gas ducts and make them in corrosion-resistant technology (stainless steel), as well as provide adequate thermal insulation.
Results achieved:
CAPEX: PLN 650,000
Energy savings: 22,883MWh, 1,967 TOE
Economic savings: more than PLN 4,500,000/year
White cert revenue: PLN 3,934,000
Example 2 – heat recovery from compressors
Description:
One of the best ways to save energy is heat recovery. They can be recovered from various sources and reused in the plant at different locations. One example of heat recovery is compressed air systems. One of our clients invested in such a system, which resulted in the complete shutdown of two gas furnaces previously used to produce domestic hot water and for central heating. The investment paid for itself after less than a year.
It should not be forgotten that any such action has a direct impact on emissions therefore reduces the organization’s carbon footprint in scope 1. Only in scope 1 or 2 does the company have direct control over its emissions, so for determining the decarbonization path, it is worth remembering to prepare a list of such projects and include the effects of their implementation in the plans for reducing emissions.
Results achieved:
CAPEX: ~ PLN 75,000
Energy savings: 1,360 MWh, 117 TOE
Economic savings: more than PLN 175,000/year
White cert revenue: PLN 234,000
Example 3 – heat recovery from the chimney of a cement plant
Description:
Among the most common solutions used by CertyNergia Polska clients is waste heat recovery, the results allow recovery of up to 80 percent of waste energy.
One example is the heat recovery from a chimney in a cement plant, illustrated in the accompanying graphic.
The project results in savings of more than 5 GWh of energy per year, about 38,000 tons of CO2 per year.
Revenues from acquired energy efficiency certificates amount to more than €1,000,000….
Achieved results:
Economic savings: more than 1,000,000 PLN/year
White cert revenue: > 4,300,000 PLN
Example 4 – coal boiler retrofit
Description:
The project consisted of upgrading the air box of a grate boiler in a coal-fired steam boiler. As a result of the upgrade, the efficiency of the boiler increased by more than 10%
Results achieved:
CAPEX: 557,000 PLN
Energy savings: 74,632 GJ
Economic savings: over 1,200,000 PLN/year
White cert revenue: > 3,500,000 PLN
